The Alabama Users Group met on Friday, September 28 at Birmingham Public Library. BPL staff are outstanding hosts — they made us welcome in their outstanding facility and fed us well, too!. We also owe a special thank you to Jim Tucker (SOLINET) for helping plan the meeting and arranging for our speakers. The 81 registered participants enjoyed having Kate Nevin’s with us — and when she speaks we always learn so much about what SOLINET is doing for US. Kate also reviewed the results of SOLINET’s recent project on the future of libraries and the “scenarios” developed to help others plan for their library’s future. This is stimulating stuff — and if you haven’t looked it over on the SOLINET site — do so soon! Linda Gabel (OCLC) provided an overview about OCLC, including its “cutting-edge” visions as well as its practical solutions. The other break-out sessions featured the Alabama Digital Preservation Network, using a wiki for project implementation and management, what RFID is and isn’t, and the Go Local feature in Medline Plus. We are already hard at work for the next Alabama Users Group meeting to be held on March 14, 2008, at Jacksonville State University.
