MLA/MAC Annual Conference Update

The weather in Baltimore has gone from in the 90’s when I flew in on Tuesday, to the high 50’s today, with some rain mixed in here and there. Yesterday I attended some Contributed Paper Sessions. I think my favorite was “When a Blog is Not a Blog,” by Bart Ragon, David Moody and Paulina Vaca of the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library at University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville. Bart gave some really neat insight into further uses of the Wordpress blogging software.
My favorite idea was probably using WP to deliver digital signage content - making the signage look neither like a webpage nor a blog…they accomplished this by manipulating the CSS and using RSS feeds to pull in library content and external news. He also discussed using RSS and Yahoo! Pipes to pull in content - I’m going to attempt to replicate it on this blog, with dynamic content of our upcoming ES classes listed. Wish me luck!
Today, Bart, Michelle Kraft and I did a panel discussion on technology. Michelle talked about social photo sites and mashups, I discussed podcasting, rss and folksonomies; and Bart talked about blogs and wikis. It was a fun presentation - which almost didn’t take place: About a 1/2 hour before our session, a fire alarm went off so the building was evacuated - but I guess it was a false alarm as they let us back in the building very quickly. I did cause a little bit of a stir I guess you could say. At one point when I was discussing “buy-in” from fellow staff, administrators, IT, etc., I jokingly said, “well the upside is that those people who are not open to these new technologies will either die soon or retire. I was told after by one person that she was offended by my comments, but my take on it - first: it was a joke, and second: if you weren’t offended, you were not listening.
