Victorian public librarians in planning mode

from Christine…

I’m just back from a planning retreat for library managers and senior staff from Victorian public librarians and the State Library of Victoria. SLV administers the Statewide projects which are projects that benefit all public libraries in the state  and we are going into a new triennial funding round. It was a great 3 days of discussion, and at the end of it all we have 6 projects that are to be refined and reshaped. They are around the themes of leadership, digitisation, quality standards, collaborative procurement, advocacy and exhibitions. Our facilitators were able to keep us all focussed and energised and we also had some fun learning how to play African drums and competing in a music trivia competition.

We are currently hosting a Norwegian librarian, Heidi Ryan, who is here to learn about how to administer the 23 Things program for lots of people. She is planning to role it out across 4 counties in Norway and is very enthusiastic about this and the unconference she is planning in Oslo.

I’m really enjoying Facebook - particularly staying in touch with colleagues who were members of the International Network of Public Libraries. Its really quite addictive, and I’m interested in how libraries are using it too.  As it gets swamped by baby boomers it seems that people think it will lose its appeal for younger ones, but you’d have to wonder why, there’s no need for any crossover, and it can be whatever you want it to be.
