Cultural Institutions Affected by Recent Tornadoes in ATL

Posted by Alicia on 26 March, 2008 in Preservation

Solinet knows of three cultural institutions directly affected by the storms and tornadoes that came through the Atlanta area March 14th-16th.
Atlanta-Fulton Public Library had some broken windows at their central library but luckily no collections were damaged. They also suffered from debris from nearby buildings. One of their biggest challenges was that it was difficult to access the Central Library due to the number of streets closed in downtown Atlanta.
The CNN building was also damaged in the tornado. The library has some damage to their tape collections. They were working internally with their preservation staff and with Belfor to help salvage those items.
The biggest devestation occurred to the Historic Oakland Cemetery. An initial damage assessment has found 7500 new cases of damage to monuments and other structures. There was no damage to the building that houses the historic records. Their most pressing need is expertise on monument repair. If you have that expertise and would like to offer assistance, you may call them at 404-688-2107. For more information on the damage to Historic Oakland Cemetery, please see their website.
Also, as a reminder, SOLINET is available 24/7 to assist institutions affected by disaster. You can also volunteer to help institutions affected by a disaster. Simply fill out the form to register as a potential volunteer. We can connect volunteers with institutions looking for assistance.
