In a disaster…who’s got your back????

From SOLINET’s Kara McClurken

I teach a lot of disaster preparedness classes…. And one of the things I teach is that local or regional emergency networks are a great way to share resources (people and supplies) in the event of an emergency. People often call me asking for model mutual aid agreement forms, but there are not a lot of models out there. Here are two that I would encourage you to check out—one is from Library of Congress Federal Library and Information Center Committee/Preservation Directorate and the other is from the San Diego/Imperial County Libraries Disaster Response Network (SILDRN).

Do you have a mutual agreement that you’d like to share? I’d love to hear from you, kmcclurken@solinet.net

(And in answer to the title, know that SOLINET also has your back in a disaster…check out our disaster assistance page at www.solinet.net/disaster. )

What I like about the SILDRN mutual aid agreement is that it’s not heavy handed. Members will try their best to help others during a disaster, but they are not legally bound to assist. It’s really an assistance network, that formalizes what we already do.
