Wednesday’s word

From SOLINET’s Jessica Lemming, wednesday’s word is:

Enclosures. Boxes boxes everywhere. We store everything in a box, including ourselves! There are whole stores dedicated solely to containers. And what do these boxes, containers, enclosures do? They protect us and our stuff from weather, temperature, dirt, they consolidate things, and generally keep stuff out that may cause harm and that we don’t want around. That is the exact reason we build them for our collections.

Now I must disclose, the world of the archival box ain’t pretty. If you have ever been to an archive, you know what I am talking about. This vision usually manifests itself as a wall of tan or grey boxes with small typewritten or hand penciled labels. Like our other boxes in various forms, they have a purpose as well, to protect the object inside. An upcoming SOLINET class aptly titled “Protective Enclosures for Collections” will begin to reveal the world of the enclosure and the many reasons that this can be a wonderful thing for our collections. This class teaches the fundamentals of fabricating a variety of enclosures with step by step instructions, as well as rationale behind those lovely tan and grey materials. (sorry, no floral contact paper… :)
