Follow along with the LYRASIS Preservation Services and have a disaster plan MayDay.

Discussions of disasters appear in news, blogs and listservs weekly, reminding us that a collection and facility damaging event can happen to anyone at any time. And yet, many of us put off writing a disaster plan.

Heritage Preservation along with the Institute of Museum and Library Services did a formal survey resulting in the 2006 report “A Public Trust at Risk.” They found that over 70% of libraries, archives and museums have no emergency plan or trained staff to carry it out. One of their responses was MayDay. This initiative asks cultural institutions to “do one thing for emergency preparedness” on the 1st of May.

So if you haven’t gotten around to writing or updating your disaster plan, LYRASIS Preservation Services wants to change that! Starting January 11, 2010 we will begin publishing easy steps that you can take to complete your Disaster Plan. A new step will be presented every 2 weeks. If you follow each step you will have a Disaster Plan by MayDay 2010.
