I have never done a non-MARC cataloging, yet, I believe MARC cataloging has got a lot of benefits such as making all the library catalogs consistent and avoids being manipulated by different cataloging attitudes. However, MARC lacks many descriptive elements for various formats of materials.
In conclusion, I think, incase the new non-MARC cataloging become as standard and as popular as MARC is at the moment, then it might worth converting to this method incase the library was facing multiple problems applying MARC. Or, the library might like to apply non-MARC cataloging only in a section and later decide whether or not to convert the whole collection.

Library songs--I've been amazed at the most recent entry into that category--"Librarian" by My Morning Jacket. A snippet--

"Walk across the courtyard, towards the library.
I can hear the insects buzz and the leaves 'neath my feet...

Ramble up the stairwell, into the hall of books...
Since we got the interweb these hardly get used."

I find it both a charming and reverent song about librarians and library spaces, but pretty understanding and insightful!

What I like about the SILDRN mutual aid agreement is that it's not heavy handed. Members will try their best to help others during a disaster, but they are not legally bound to assist. It's really an assistance network, that formalizes what we already do.

To reply to the article, and to reply from the perspective of a paraprofessional who is employed in an academic library, I find the information presented very interesting, and right on target.
Firstly, we should have the highest regard to service to our patrons, and viewing what we do as a business will lean towards that outcome.
Secondly, education is part of a direct process, which concludes in an anticipated outcome, and in today's very competitive world, that outcome is higher than before.
Academia is being called to "landmarks" of accountability. Good. We have the best achievement in our end product. We are part of a betterment of the minds. We should all, as information assistants, be aware of our environmental changes and update our skills. I find the results more of a solidification of expectations. Lets get on with it, and not be afraid of changes.

I agree that digitization of publications is the most important. I found a website recently www.pressmart.net providing the services of digitization of all print publications (including archives).

I was wondering how to get permission to add our class to your list of courses. It looks like our course would be a good addition to round out the types of classes you've already got posted. We focus in on classroom management, specificallly how to manage your troubled and problem students. Can you tell me how to do that. Our site is http://www.youthchg.com if you want to check out if our course is a good fit. Thanks.
